Street named to honour Chanderpaul

GEORGETOWN, Guyana — West Indies batting star Shivnarine Chanderpaul has received another honour from the people of Guyana. On Saturday evening the New Garden Street – outside the historic Bourda Cricket Ground – was renamed the Shivnarine Chanderpaul Drive. In making the announcement, Mr Hamilton Green, Mayor of Georgetown, said it was done to recognize Chanderpaul’s amazing performances for Guyana and West Indies on the cricket field.“He is an outstanding son of the soil and he has done us proud. He is recognized all over the world as an outstanding cricketer and we in Guyana are truly proud of him.”In a brief speech, Chanderpaul said he was thrilled to receive yet another from the people of his homeland.“I want to thank the people who have named this street in my honour. As a little boy walking down this street I never thought the day would come when something like this would happen,” he said.

“When I went out to bat [against England] on Friday and heard the crowd shouting my name I knew all the people of Guyana were behind me … I know I have the support of my people and I will continue to do my all for all those who support me. I thank them all.”

On Friday night Chanderpaul received another award after being named Guyana’s Sports Personality for 2008. Earlier in the week he was awarded the Cacique Crown of Honour – the country’s third highest honour. The 34-year-old was last year named the International Cricket Council’s International Cricketer of the Year.
