Shivnarine Chanderpaul is in the West Indies’ Champions Trophy squad

West Indies star Shivnarine Chanderpaul is to leave title-chasing Durham at the start of September and will miss the last four County Championship matches.

The 33-year-old batsman will depart for Champions Trophy duties in Pakistan but has told BBC Radio Newcastle he will keep an eye on events at the Riverside.

“It’s a shame. But when we get called to international duty, we’ve got to go.

“I’ll keep checking on the guys and hopefully we’ll move on top of the table and do enough to win the title.” With Durham challenging for the title, the former West Indies captain is confident that the squad has enough quality to maintain a serious challenge in his absence.

“We’ve been doing pretty well so far,” he said. “We have enough guys there with experience and some good young fellows. Hopefully they can go out and get a job done and get on top of the table.”

But Chanderpaul has been a frustrated spectator as rain has washed out the first three days of the Championship match against Nottinghamshire at the Riverside.
