Chanderpaul hits a ton to keep Lancs in contest

CRICKET: Shivnarine Chanderpaul held Lancashire’s batting together with a maiden hundred for the county against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl today.

The prolific West Indian left hander, who hit 92 on debut in last week’s draw at Durham, helped his side recover from 41-3 on the opening day of their County Championship match with a fine 118 off 217 balls.

The visitors closed on 262-8 after 96 overs.

Lancashire lost Tom Smith – opening the batting due Stephen Moore’s dislocated shoulder – Paul Horton and Mark Chilton in the morning session.

But, having seen Glen Chapple elect to bat first, Chanderpaul shared partnerships of 78 with Steven Croft and 77 with Luke Sutton for the fourth and sixth wickets respectively.

Croft scored 41 off 86 balls and Sutton 27 off 87, but they fell in the afternoon and evening sessions on a decent batting track.

Peter Moores and Chapple made two changes from last week’s Durham match, with Gary Keedy replacing Jimmy Anderson and Gareth Cross playing as a batsman in place of Moore.

Young left armer Danny Briggs returned an impressive 2-54 from 18 overs for Hampshire.

Briggs bowled Croft and had Cross caught behind by Michael Bates for four during the afternoon session.

Smith and Chilton had earlier been caught behind off the bowling of James Tomlinson and Sean Ervine, while Horton was brilliantly caught one handed at second slip by Neil McKenzie off David Balcombe.

Sutton was the sixth wicket to go when he slashed Balcombe to James Vince at first slip with 204 on the board in the 78th.

Chapple had been bowled off a Dominic Cork no ball before edging the next ball to Vince at first to give Hampshire their seventh wicket.

And Cork had Chanderpaul, who hit 16 boundaries, caught behind to leave the score at 249-8 in the 91st over.
