Chanderpauls lead Tiger’s XI to double win

The father/ son combination of Shivnarine and Tagenarine Chanderpaul combined at the weekend to lead Tiger’s XI to commanding victories over Unity Sports Club in two specially arranged limited- over matches at the Unity ground, East Coast Demerara.

In the first game on Saturday, Tiger’s XI won by six wickets, while on Sunday they won by a comfortable 61- run margin.

Batting first on Saturday, Unity SC struggled to 131 all out from 30 overs with former national Under- 19 opener Hemraj Garbarran top- scoring with 24. Vishnu Roopram and Lalchand Persaud chipped in with 20 and 18 respectively.

Bowling for Tiger’s XI, left- arm spinners Dru Bahadur and Tagenarine bagged 3- 32 and 3- 5 respectively, while Khemraj Chanderpaul, the father of Shivnarine, took 2- 30, and Tariq Dharamlall 2- 5.

In reply, Tiger’s XI stumbled to 51- 4 by the 15th over before Tagenarine and Shivnarine joined forces to complete the win from 27.4 overs with an unbro ken fifth wicket partner ship of 81.

Tagenarine, who recently cracked three consecutive hundreds for GYO in the Georgetown Cricket Association’s Under- 15 competition, ended on 65 with six fours and one six, while Shivnarine made a responsible 29 with one four and one maximum.

On Sunday, Tigers’ XI took first strike and posted a challenging 231- 7 from 35 overs with Shivnarine, who was surprisingly dropped by the West Indies for the current limited- over series against Pakistan, slamming a belligerent 88.

The 36- year- old lefthander spanked seven boundaries and six sixes during his innings, and received solid support from Tagenarine, who made 62 ( 6x4s), and Sunil Dyal with 22 ( 3x6s).

V. Harry picked up 2- 19 and I. Khan 2- 49 for Unity SC, who responded with 170 all out in 33.5 overs.

Garbarran was again amongst the runs with a top- score of 61 ( 5x4s, 1×6), while Roopram made 18.

Bowling for Tiger’s XI, medium- pacer Pradeep Abdool grabbed 4- 27 from six overs; Bahadur snapped up 3- 53 from seven overs, while Shivnarine nabbed 2- 28 from seven.

Trophies for the games were donated by businessman Asif Khan; Tiger’s XI was sponsored by Shiek Mohamed’s Tiger Sports, while Unity SC was sponsored by K& K Service Station of Unity, Mahaica.
