He has travelled all over the world in pursuit of cricketing excellence, and in the process, has given yeoman service to his country, the Caribbean and the world over.

The billboard was unveiled by Chanderpaul at a simple ceremony which was preceded by glowing tributes that highlighted his many accomplishments.

Sport Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, who attended the ceremony, told the gathering that Chanderpaul is a role model to young people in that he has demonstrated that with diligent work and discipline a lot can be achieved.
Chanderpaul, in response to the initiative, thanked the Unity/Lancaster Sports Club, adding that the club was the driving force behind his success over the years.
Chanderpaul is the West Indies second highest runscorer in Test cricket and the first Guyanese batsman to pass 10,000 Test runs. He also has 27 Test centuries, second only to Brian Lara’s 34.
Chanderpaul has also accumulated 8,778 runs from 268 ODIs with 11 hundreds and 59 half-centuries.
Prior to the unveiling of the billboard, the ‘Shiv Chanderpaul’ Cricket Academy was officially launched.
Dr. Anthony, in delivering the feature remarks, said the academy is a fitting tribute to a man who has done great things for the village of Unity, Guyana and has put the West Indies on the map.
“When I heard of this project of rehabilitating this ground and bringing it back together and not only doing that, bringing back cricket on a regular basis and training young people in this community and surrounding communities to be involve in cricket, I taught this was a very laudable occasion,” Dr. Anthony said.

He continued, “We on the government side, we would very well like to play our part and partner, so when we heard about this project I said readily we will be on board. Today, I am pleased with what I am seeing here; the entire ground has transformed and I think that this will be a great cricket academy. This is a very fitting tribute to Shiv because he has spent his early cricketing days right here practicing and also playing that eventually earned him the skills that now he is known for at the international level. When you look at Shiv on the international level it tells you of a man with immensity, a man with passion for his game and perhaps that immensity and passion were born right here by him playing hours and hours on this field and I hope that he could inspire many of the younger ones from this village and surrounding villages to go on and be international stars.”
The Sport Minister concluded by wishing the academy every success and hoped it lived up to its expectations.
Renowned television personality and cricket commentator, Naim Chan, who was the brainchild of the academy, said the purpose of is to nurture the youthful minds so they can one day represent their villages, country and of course the West Indies.
Chanderpaul said that the academy is a great opportunity for the young boys and girls to acquire the necessary cricketing skills and also to nurture the young people to become well rounded individuals. Weather permitting, the academy will open in January.
The club also unveiled another billboard in honour of former president of the Guyana Cricket Board, Chetram Singh, who, like Chanderpaul, is also a native of Unity.
